The Formula for Abiding in Christ…

Jesus tells us in John 15 that abiding in Him is absolutely imperative, for without Him we can do nothing (John 15:5)! Jesus is telling us here just how important it is to abide in Him – for with out him…nothing, zip, zero, nada can be accomplished of eternal significance. The good news is Jesus didn’t leave us hanging!

In this text, we find out how to Abide in Jesus. Jesus gives us a sort of formula for Abiding in Him:

Formula for Abiding in Jesus

  • To abide in Jesus we first come to him for cleansing from sins.

Jesus says this text, John 15:3 “You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.”

The entry of Jesus’s words of truth and grace into our lives results in forgiveness of our sins when we believe upon Him and His words —such words as these to his disciples in the previous chapter,  “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6 NKJV), or John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (NKJV). So first, we turn to Jesus for cleansing from our sins. Hello eternal life! (John 14:1-3).

  • Then we stay close to Jesus resulting in fruitfulness.

HOW Do we Stay Close To (/Abide In) Jesus?

  • By putting the Bible in our hearts, prayer on our lips, and love in our actions.

    • The Bible in our hearts:  John 15:7 “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you…”
    • Prayer on our lips:  John 15: 7b- “…you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.”
    • Love in our actions:  John 15:10, 12 “If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love… 12“This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” NKJV

We Abide in Jesus by first coming to him for cleansing from sin; and staying close (abiding) by putting the Bible in our hears, prayer on our lips, and love in our actions. This results in fruitfulness to God’s glory!

That’s John 15 boiled down into a simple spiritual formula. Now lets get clean, close, captivated by the word, constant in prayer, and charitable with our love!
